Adam Yauch Remembered With Brooklyn Playground Dedication

The Palmetto Playground in Brooklyn will be renamed in honor of Adam Yauch, the Beastie Boy known as MCA who died last year. A ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Friday morning and will feature fellow Beastie Boy Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz, Yauch’s parents and other family members, as well as Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and other city and state politicians.
Yauch grew up in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood and learned to ride his bicycle at the park on Columbia Place and State Street that will now bear his name. The playground contains basketball courts, a community garden, greenhouse, fitness area, open play space and a dog run.
A musician, filmmaker and activist, Yauch died last May at the age of 47 after being diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland in 2009.
