ABC will attempt to form the next One Direction – or at least the next O-Town – with a new reality singing competition called Boy Band.

The network placed a 10-episode series order for the competition, which is set to debut this summer. No hosts or judges (or “architects,” as they’re called on Boy Band) have been announced, but Variety reports that notable past boy band and girl band members are being approached for those roles.

Over the course of Boy Band, singers will compete for a spot in the quintet, with the TV audience voting on the fate of the fivesome. Together, the winning singers who form the boy band will receive a recording contract with Hollywood Records.

The Boy Band premise is similar to ABC’s 2000 series Making the Band, a reality competition that ultimately resulted in the creation of the boy band O-Town. With the impending arrival of Boy Band to network television, music-based reality competitions are suddenly back in vogue, just a few years after series like American Idol, The X-Factor, Rising Star, The Sing-Off, The Singing Bee and more all faded off the air due to sagging ratings.

However, the success of NBC’s The Voice has resulted in networks circling back to music-based reality competitions, with even a resurrected American Idol reportedly sparking a bidding war between NBC and its former home, Fox.
