After genre-hopping covers of songs by Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Eminem and Adele, Ten Second Songs mastermind Anthony Vincent has jumped from pop to Pokémon, releasing a rendition of the animated TV show’s theme sung in 20 styles distinct to the late-Nineties.
While Vincent has never imposed a temporal constraint on his covers, the choice here is fitting as Pokémon enjoys a resurgence thanks to the new app, Pokémon Go, which was released 20 years after the franchise’s debut (the initial video games were released in 1996, while the TV show premiered in Japan in 1997 and came to the U.S. in 1998).
But even with the late-Nineties limit, Vincent had plenty of genres to work with. After easing into the theme with a spot-on impression of the original track, sung by Jason Paige, he jumped deftly from Aqua to Smashing Pumpkins, Björk to Blink-182 and K-Ci and Jojo to Marilyn Manson with characteristic zeal.
Other highlights from the clip include Vincent’s impressions of Destiny’s Child, Mase, Rob Zombie and singer-songwriter Paula Cole, whose track “I Don’t Want to Wait” served as the theme for another classic Nineties show, Dawson’s Creek.
