Scott Weiland: 20 Essential Songs

From brooding Stone Temple Pilots ballads to ballsy Velvet Revolver rave-ups

On Thursday night, Scott Weiland was found dead on his tour bus at the age of 48. Throughout a two-decade-plus career with Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver and various solo ventures, the singer became just as well known for his personal demons as for his obvious musical talents, but his recorded legacy stands strong. Weiland’s signature baritone delivery, glam-derived swagger and way with a tender hook made him one of the standout voices of the Nineties and beyond. Here are 20 essential songs from his sizable catalog.

Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts, “White Lightning” (2015)

When Weiland released Blaster this past March, it signaled his first new, original studio material since the ill-fated STP reunion album half a decade earlier. And with a new band — dubbed the Wildabouts — behind him, the singer sounded positively reenergized. "White Lightning," the album's first single, is powered by a monstrous, Godzilla-glam stomp, over which a raspy-voiced Weiland gets down and dirty rolling out a "hillbilly tale." As he explained to Billboard, "It's a musical homage to the film Lawless … moonshine, jalopies … the whole scene."
