Garbage Pail Kids Take on Rock Hall of Fame

From Kendrick Lamar to Deep Purple, presenters and inductees get parodied in latest series, ‘Rock Hall of Shame’

Any kid from the Eighties remembers how Garbage Pail Kids pushed the envelope with caricatures of pop culture notables from music, movies, and television – especially if they were confiscated or got detention for sticking them to a school locker. But the gross-out collectibles continue to skewer, recently taking on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2016 inductees.

As Colin Walton, the Garbage Pail Kids brand manager at Topps, explains to Rolling Stone, they've been connecting the parodies to "key pop culture moments as they happen," and the recent series, GPK: American as Apple Pie – In Your Face, which features an Americana parody theme was a hit, so they wanted to expand with mini-sets on Topps.com tied to specific events.

"We expanded the online releases to include parodies of award ceremonies such as the Grammys. When we saw that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was coming up soon after, we thought it would be a perfect follow up," Walton says. "For the Hall of Fame, we included parodies of the entire 2016 class, and split N.W.A out into three cards, one featuring the entire group with a focus on Eazy-E, and separate cards for Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. We also included three of the presenters. The jokes come from our freelance artists and from me, sometimes working with John Williams, our creative services director, or Mark Von Ohlen, the entertainment brand manager."

He explains the inspiration behind the spoofs to Rolling Stone above.

Struck Steve / Mangled Miller

"David Gross came up with the idea of parodying Miller’s most famous album covers, which feature a pegasus. This being a GPK, the most logical next step was having it hurt Miller."

Chicago Away / On the Lamm

"David Gross came up with a parody of their hit 'Saturday in the Park,' and I thought it would be a great opportunity to make a comment on the recent focus in the media on crime in the city of Chicago. Because the band name is only one word long, we parodied Robert Lamm's name as well."

Dunked Deep / Pyro Purple

"Artist David Gross came up with a joke parodying their most famous song, 'Smoke on the Water.' We picked the lineup that performed on the song originally, rather than all the members being inducted."

Eazy Does It / Errant Eric

"This is a parody of their first album cover, including all six members, which also played up Eazy-E's short stature and his feuds with Ice and Dre."

Kudos Kendrick / Lauded Lamar

"John Williams and I wanted to focus on how the general public's perception of rap has changed since the Eighties. N.W.A never won a Grammy, and the only member of the group who did is Dre. So here we show the contrast between presenter Kendrick Lamar's seven Grammys with the three living, snubbed, inducted members of N.W.A."

Crazy Kid / Rock the Boat

"John Williams thought that it would be funny to play up Kid Rock's outspoken conservative views, and I thought it was a great opportunity to show how it contrasts with a lot of the older rock & rollers' ideals."

Ear Doctor Dre / N.W. Andre

"Artist Brent Engstrom parodied Beats by Dre by invoking the classic boombox GPK from the Eighties, Deaf GEOFF."

Duplicative Dan / Poser Patrick

"The funniest thing about the Black Keys is their feud with Jack White from the White Stripes, so I wanted to parody that. Because the group only has two members, we were able to spoof both of their names."

Ice’d Cube / Cold Cube

"Brent Engstrom went for a very literal play on Ice Cube's name, which fits the classic GPK humor perfectly."

Tricked Rick / Cheap Carlos

"David Gross is playing off of Rick Nielsen's crazy guitars while perfectly keeping within the Eighties GPK feel. The 'B' name is a play on the drummer's name."
