Any kid from the Eighties remembers how Garbage Pail Kids pushed the envelope with caricatures of pop culture notables from music, movies, and television – especially if they were confiscated or got detention for sticking them to a school locker. But the gross-out collectibles continue to skewer, recently taking on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2016 inductees.
As Colin Walton, the Garbage Pail Kids brand manager at Topps, explains to Rolling Stone, they've been connecting the parodies to "key pop culture moments as they happen," and the recent series, GPK: American as Apple Pie – In Your Face, which features an Americana parody theme was a hit, so they wanted to expand with mini-sets on Topps.com tied to specific events.
"We expanded the online releases to include parodies of award ceremonies such as the Grammys. When we saw that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was coming up soon after, we thought it would be a perfect follow up," Walton says. "For the Hall of Fame, we included parodies of the entire 2016 class, and split N.W.A out into three cards, one featuring the entire group with a focus on Eazy-E, and separate cards for Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. We also included three of the presenters. The jokes come from our freelance artists and from me, sometimes working with John Williams, our creative services director, or Mark Von Ohlen, the entertainment brand manager."
