Last year was a big one for Courtney Barnett: The Australian singer-songwriter rode a cresting wave of buzz around her late-2013 release The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas to American clubs and festivals, winning new fans all the way with clever, quirky tunes like her signature "Avant Gardener." 2014 was also the year that Barnett got to work on her proper debut LP, recording at a studio near her Melbourne home with her band, the Courtney Barnetts. "The reaction from The Double EP was pretty surreal," she says. "I didn’t really expect a lot of that! But I tried not to consider it too much when we were in the studio." "It was really fun making it, and I feel super-proud of it."
