Rolling Stone Deputy Photo Editor Sacha Lecca is a backstage-photo wizard. "Shooting bands behind the scenes and at soundcheck is one of my favorite things to do," he says. "I enjoy essentially being a fly on the wall and capturing the moments, the nerves, laughs, and being around the music." This weekend he tailed the Avett Brothers at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Here, he caught the band in a more serious moment that was quickly followed by some fun as the crew sang lyrics from random songs, including the chorus to "How Bizarre" by OMC.
"Soundcheck started later than expected so I was already onstage for a while photographing the space, the crew working the lights and other details of the environment," Lecca says. "Seth was the first to emerge from the backstage area and sat alone onstage quietly strumming a guitar. He was deep in thought and hadn't noticed me. This felt like a more private moment so despite the band was expecting me to be there I didn't start shooting until I could say hello. This shot of Seth is probably the very first image I shot of the band that afternoon."
"Seth Avett in the foreground as his brother Scott explores the platforms and barricades in the photo pit."
"Soundcheck began with a slow, quiet and calm vibe. Seth and Scott Avett and Bob Crawford gather around and discuss written notes for that evening's show."
"Bob Crawford on the fiddle during soundcheck."
"In a nearly empty Barclays Center, Seth and Scott Avett on the part of the stage extending out into where the fans on the floor will be."
"Scott Avett gives a thumbs up to the guys behind the soundboard. The show opens with Scott at this spot — sitting at the edge of the stage playing banjo on 'John Brown's Dream.'"
"Avett Brothers cellist Joe Kwon listens in on plans for that evening's show."
"Itt's near the end of soundcheck, and everyone is more relaxed and having fun. Seth and Scott Avett at the microphone trading lyrics to make each other laugh."
"Joe Kwon also rocks out during the concert."
"In dramatic contrast to the more reserved soundcheck vibe, the Avett Brothers are full on high energy during their show at the Barclays Center."
