See Tove Lo Recall First Big Show After Vocal Cord Surgery in Animated Clip
A couple months after releasing her debut album Queen of the Clouds, Tove Lo had to undergo surgery on her vocal cords to remove cysts. The then-new artist was forced to wrap up a breakthrough year – which she dominated with singles “Habits (Stay High)” and “Talking Body” – by taking a hiatus for her recovery, and in the latest installment of Rolling Stone‘s “Had to Be There” video series, she recalls her big return at Alabama’s Hangout Music Festival in May 2015.
“I was stuck for two months doing voice rehab and fucking losing my mind,'” she reveals in the animated clip. “I was like, ‘What if my voice doesn’t come back?'”
Tove Lo’s performance at the “insanely beautiful” beach-set festival marked her first appearance in front of a large crowd since her recovery, and beforehand, the Swedish star was concerned that no one would remember who she was. “I’m really, really nervous and I run out and it’s packed almost all the way back to the other main stage,” she says, before noting that as her summer continued, the festival crowds only became bigger and bigger. “I grew so much as a performer. It gave me my confidence back.”
Tove Lo’s second album, Lady Wood, will be released October 28th; preorders are available now on iTunes.
