On Friday, Nick Jonas will release his latest solo album Last Year Was Complicated. The record delves into adult relationships and heartache; and listeners are responding well. Jonas’ new single “Close,” featuring Swedish singer Tove Lo, is at Number 15 on the Billboard charts. Jonas spoke with Rolling Stone at Live Nation’s National Concert Day about playing with Prince’s band and his evolving relationship with Demi Lovato.
“It’s a great moment for me to be as creative as possible and to see that the music is out and connecting with people feels great,” Jonas said about Complicated. “[My] progression is embracing more of the soul and R&B influences, modern R&B as a through-line and keeping it timeless to some degree with production.”
Jonas said his R&B inspiration was Prince. He even played with members of Prince’s New Power Generation six years ago with his blues-rock side project, Nick Jonas & the Administration. “Hearing their stories about what an incredible performer and creative person [Prince] was, was so inspiring,” said Jonas.
Jonas is showcasing his funkier (perhaps Prince-inspired) sound on a co-headlining tour with his fellow former Disney star, Demi Lovato. Jonas said that as they enter a new phase of their lives, their friendship is expanding into a business relationship. Jonas and Lovato are co-owners of Safehouse Records, a subsidiary of Island. “It just makes sense to do this together,” Jonas said. “To build our careers at the same time.”
