See Corey Taylor Tease Slipknot’s Sixth LP, Give Mask-Wearing Advice

“Be prepared to sweat to death,” vocalist says of wearing costumes onstage during summer

In advance of Slipknot and Marilyn Manson‘s joint summer tour, Slipknot singer Corey Taylor stopped by the Live Nation National Concert Day event, held in NYC in early May. The vocalist teased the masked metal group’s forthcoming sixth album, which may mark a shift in their style.

“We’re trying to think of where we can go musically that still has the soul of what we’re trying to say, what we’re trying to do, how we’re trying to help people evolve with their lives,” Taylor told Rolling Stone before detailing how going back to their roots and influences will affect the new sound. “We love everything from old-school thrash to bands like Neurosis, Nine Inch Nails. [We’re] wearing our influences a little more on our sleeve and seeing where that will take us.”

As for the summer tour, which kicks off June 9th in Salt Lake City, Taylor sees Slipknot and Manson as the perfect complements to one another’s style. “He’s so good at that reactionary rock & roll,” he explains. “Slipknot holds down the metal side of that where no matter who you are, you listen to our music and it elicits a response. It elicits some kind of way for us to feel.”

Both performers are as visual as they are visceral: Slipknot still put on a costumed spectacle every time they take the stage, while Manson has continually updated his ghoulish makeup during the course of his career. “Live, visually and emotionally, it just made sense for us to join forces and go out,” Taylor says.

Taylor also offers some tips for bands who wear masks or costumes onstage, especially for a summer tour. “Be prepared to sweat to death,” he says. “Bring a lifetime supply of Wet-Naps, ’cause it’s gonna get a little gross. And try not to throw up on your best outfit.”
