Hear the Cranberries’ New Orchestral Take on ‘Linger’

Irish band’s first big hit gets elegant update for unplugged album ‘Something Else,’ due out in April

Hear Cranberries Tender, Acoustic New Version of 'Linger'

Hear the Cranberries' new orchestral version of "Linger," included on the band's upcoming album 'Something Else.'

In late April, the Cranberries will release a new unplugged album titled Something Else, featuring stripped-down and orchestral renditions of classic singles as well as three new tracks. Below, listen to an acoustic version of the band’s massive 1993 single “Linger.”

On the revamped track, singer Dolores O’Riordan’s voice shines above accompaniment from the Irish Chamber Orchestra. The Orchestra’s contributions soften the already tender ballad.

“‘Linger’ was the first song I wrote after joining the Cranberries,” O’Riordan recalls for Rolling Stone. The Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? single was the band’s first major hit. “I was 18, and the youngest member of the band was 16 at the time. We never imagined it’d be such a big hit.”

The song was an international success, peaking at Number Eight in the United States and helping the Irish band land a video on MTV. “The bittersweet love song still holds all that sentimentality for us personally, which is why we had to include it on this project,” O’Riordan continues. “Universally, I think its message remains timeless and relevant, never going out of fashion, yet never quite in fashion. It’s amazing to have a song hold up 25 years later, and I hope this acoustic version allows our fans to hear a Cranberries classic in a new way.”

Something Else, which will also feature acoustic versions of “Zombie” and “Dreams,” will be released on April 28th. The band will tour Europe in support of the record in May and June.
