Darlene Love‘s famous fans include Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and Steve Van Zandt, all of whom had a hand in her great new LP, Introducing Darlene Love. But the singer, best known for “He’s a Rebel” and other girl-group classics, is a die-hard music fan herself. Love shared with us a list of the vocalists she looks to for inspiration. “These are the artists I listen to when I get up in the morning,” Love says. Here are her thoughts on five epic voices that could jumpstart anyone’s day.
Barbra Streisand, “People”
Barbra’s voice is just so strong and so pure. The sound that came out of her mouth amazed me when I first saw her. It was almost like it was coming from her toes — like it wasn’t real.
Dionne Warwick, “Don’t Make Me Over”
I love her so much. I worked for Dionne as a backup singer for 10 years, and I drew a lot of strength from her.
Aretha Franklin, “Ain’t No Way”
Aretha and I are kindred spirits. I love all of her songs, especially this one. It really moves you and touches your heart.
Celine Dion, “All by Myself”
Celine Dion came out of the blue for me. When I found out she was from Canada, I said, “I guess Canada has some great things to offer!”
Carole King, “You’ve Got a Friend”
It’s almost impossible to pick one favorite song by Carole King, but this one sticks out for me. It tells you she’s about humanity.
