Legend plays poignant new song he wrote as an apology

Of the nine original songs on Willie Nelson‘s upcoming Band of Brothers album, “The Wall” is perhaps the most personal.

“I took on more than I could handle/I bit off more than I could chew/I hit the wall/I went off like a Roman candle/Burning everyone I knew,” sings the 81-year-old country legend in his haunting Texas twang.

“I had been on tour, and, the next thing you know, I hit the wall,” Nelson tells Rolling Stone, explaining that he wrote the song at a time when his travels had taken a big toll on his personal life and the lives of those closest to him.

Band of Brothers is out June 17th. Complementing the original tracks are five outside songs written by close friends of Nelson. He puts his spin on Vince Gill’s Whenever You Come Around,” Billy Joe Shaver’s ”The Git Go” (a duet with Jamey Johnson) and “Songwriter,” written by Gordie Sampson and Bill Anderson.
