Watch Steep Canyon Rangers, Jerry Douglas Cover Simon and Garfunkel
Steep Canyon Rangers and Jerry Douglas clearly enjoyed the time they spent together recording the bluegrass group’s latest album RADIO, since they decided to hit the stage together recently in Asheville, North Carolina.
Douglas, who nabbed the Dobro Player of the Year trophy at the recent International Bluegrass Music Association awards, produced the Grammy-winning sextet’s album and teamed up with them for this wistful version of the Simon and Garfunkel classic “The Boxer” at the Orange Peel.
In addition to pitching in with a few backing vocals, Douglas, who has worked with everyone from Alison Krauss to Mumford & Sons — with whom he recorded this song for his own excellent 2012 album, Traveler — contributes his signature pastoral dobro licks, including an elegiac outro.
Steep Canyon Rangers are in the midst of a national tour in support of RADIO, which swings through New England in early November before heading south in the coming weeks. Douglas is nominated for Musician of the Year at next week’s CMA awards — an honor he’s won three times.
