Maddie and Tae are still all about girl power on their brand-new single, “Fly,” which hits radio today. But the 19-year-old singers known for their chart-topping “Girl in a Country Song,” a dig at the so-called “bro country” trend, trade sarcasm for emotion on their new tune. Penned by the duo’s Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye, along with Tiffany Vartanyan, “Fly” is about taking risks in the face of adversity: “You can learn to fly on the way down,” they sing.

“‘Fly’ is so important to us because it really is the story of our journey, of doing something that might be crazy,” says Dye. “Being scared and being emancipated to come to Nashville at 17… saying, ‘No, we want to write our own songs,’ not knowing if that’s gonna break the deal. But you have to believe in yourself.”

“That’s why this song matters,” Marlow adds. “We hope for anyone else trying to make a dream come true, they can find the faith to keep going in ‘Fly’ when they’re about to give up.”

Maddie and Tae made their television debut of the empowering song with dueling guitars and heavenly harmony on Friday’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. (Watch above.) “Fly” is featured on the duo’s self-titled EP, which came out in November. A full-length album is due sometime this year, with the hardest part finalizing it being narrowing down the songs.

“Wee already have over two hundred,” Marlow tells Rolling Stone Country. “The theme of the record will be honesty, honestly. With everything that Tae and I do, we want to make sure it’s true and honest to who we are as people and artists.”
