Watch LeAnn Rimes’ Stark ‘The Story’ Video

Mesmerizing visuals accompany this soulful cover of a Brandi Carlile song

The camera rarely stops spinning in the new clip for LeAnn Rimes’ latest single. As the singer powers through the cathartic ballad — a cover of Brandi Carlile’s “The Story,” originally released in 2007 — the frame revolves around her, speeding up to emphasize the track’s love-affirming hook.

Rimes is the only character in the clip, and this sense of isolation adds emphasis to several of the song’s lyrics. “All of my friends who think that I’m blessed/ They don’t know my head is a mess,” she sings. “No, they don’t know who I really am/ And they don’t know what I’ve been through like you do.” Steven Sebring directed the video.

“The Story” will appear on Rimes’ as-yet-untitled next album, her first for RCA/UK. “It’s a very healing record,” she told Rolling Stone. “That’s really what I hope people get out of it, is some sense of healing. I’m not attacking anything; it’s from a settled point of view. And yes, it is vulnerable. I’m scared to death.”

Rimes also plans to explore a variety of sounds on her 16th studio album. “I’ve always been a very soulful artist,” she noted. “It came across live, but I’ve never been able to truly capture that on a record. I wanted to pull in all of these different influences, from the country side, to things that are very rootsy and grounded, to doing something with a hip-hop groove that is really organic.”
