Watch Keith Urban Pluck Front-Row Fan for Guitar Jam

Fan guitarist impresses the star with his smooth playing on “Good Thing”

Keith Urban is renowned as being one of country music’s finest guitar players, equal parts nimble and melodic. But at a recent tour stop in Gilford, New Hampshire, it was the six string talents of a fan named Rob Joyce that ended up stealing the show.

Joyce, of Berlin, Massachusetts, was at that show for his birthday and held up a sign saying he wanted to play Urban’s guitar. Urban invited him onstage and addressed Joyce’s girlfriend, who had been holding up her own sign.

“He could be your backup guitarist,” she tells Urban in the video above.

“Really, My backup guitarist? No pressure,” responded Urban, handing his guitar off to Joyce. “Let’s grab another one of my guitars. I just need any guitar.”

Joyce didn’t wait for Urban, tearing into the opening notes of “Good Thing” from Urban’s 2013 album Fuse. Waving off the second guitar, Urban and his band fall right in with him. Joyce hits the chicken-picked solo like a pro, peeling off a flashy run at the song’s big ending.

Later, Urban posted a video from his bus to give Joyce some praise for his performance.

“Massive shout of awesomeness to Rob, who killed it tonight on the guitar,” he said. “It’s one thing to have someone hold a sign up that says I want to play your guitar and then your girlfriend also had a sign pointing to you. So I was like fingers crossed, this is gonna be awesome. You played your ass off.”

Joyce actually posted video of himself playing the riffs from “Good Thing” on YouTube back in 2014. More recently, his YouTube account features performances of hits like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Brett Eldredge’s “Drunk on Your Love.”
