Watch Kacey Musgraves Cover Coldplay in London
While Prince Harry watched from the audience, Kacey Musgraves sang a stripped-down cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” during last month’s Royal Variety Performance. She was the only country artist to hit the stage during the annual London event, whose lineup also included Elton John, One Direction, Kylie Minogue and Brandon Flowers.
Joined by longtime partner Misa Arriaga, Musgraves took a folksy approach to Coldplay’s first hit, slowing the tempo significantly and subbing two acoustic guitars for the original’s electric stomp. Arriaga joins her on harmonies during the chorus, and the result is sparse and lovely, somewhat reminiscent of Gillian Welch’s duets with Dave Rawlings. (Watch the performance above.)
Having wrapped up her European tour several days before Thanksgiving, Musgraves is now back home, prepping for a trio of year-end performances in Austin with Willie Nelson. The duet partners previously shared a bill this summer, when Musgraves played a set at Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic. This time, they’ll extend the collaboration to three nights at ACL Live, with Musgraves resuming her own tour — dubbed the Kacey Musgraves Country & Western Rhinestone Revue — shortly thereafter.
