Watch Frankie Lee’s Hazy ‘Where Do We Belong’ Video

Singer-songwriter Frankie Lee’s new tune “Where Do We Belong?” has a dreamy quality to it that feels like a late-night jam session between friends — a delicate blend of country songwriting and indie rock sensibilities. The Minneapolis resident brings a lot of that restless, nocturnal energy to the table, having bounced around the country sleeping on friend’s couches and beating back an addiction before learning how to record his own songs.

“[‘Where Do We Belong?’] was written, recorded, and put away in about 20 minutes,” says Lee of the song, from his forthcoming album American Dreamer. “I was hiding out in a friend’s studio and could only record late at night when the building shut down. I think I’d been up for a few days at that point. It’s the first time I ever played all the instruments on a song of mine.”

The video echoes the song’s hazy melancholy with a series of grainy and slightly surreal shots, often featuring women. There’s a wine-drunk trio singing karaoke, Lee riding a motorcycle with a shirtless companion, and a woman using 45s as skeet targets, among others.

“The video isn’t really a video,” says Lee. “It’s more of a Midwestern vision of all the beautiful women in my life at that time. I was living in Minneapolis and working on a farm outside of town. The nights were getting too late for the early mornings and I felt like I was sleepwalking through a Twin Peaks episode for a few years… somewhere between dreams and reality, farms and towns, motorcycles, horses and beautiful girls.”

American Dreamer will be out July 8th and Lee will appear with the Replacements’ Tommy Stinson May 8th at Town Ballroom’s Leopard Lounge in Buffalo, New York.
