“We all break,” Nashville character Rayna Jaymes (portrayed by Connie Britton) says in its first look promo for the TV music drama’s upcoming fifth season. “That’s what makes us human.” It sets the dramatic tone for the show’s premiere on its new network CMT, following being dropped from its longtime home on ABC earlier this year.
Returning stars Britton, Hayden Panettiere (Juliette Barnes), Charles Esten (Deacon Claybourne), Sam Palladio (Gunnar Scott), Clare Bowen (Scarlett O’Connor), Jonathan Jackson (Avery Barkley), Chris Carmack (Will Lexington) and Lennon Stella (Maddie Conrad) reprise their roles and appear in the promo.
In the clip, each character is featured delivering lines about where each of them left off in Season Four: all of them were a bit broken and searching for new footing.
“We tape ourselves together,” Panettiere says. “So that no one can see our flawed hearts.”
Bowen, true to her Nashville character, appears more optimistic. “But not all who break are broken,” she says. “Sometimes you have to break your own heart to put the pieces back in the right place.”
Meanwhile, Esten confesses to his character’s faults, alongside Panettiere. “I was selfish, dishonest and wrong,” they say in unison.
Despite the dramatic clip opening, hope is offered at the end. Music, which serves as the true heart of the series, is portrayed as a saving grace amid their imperfect lives. “Every moment led me here, to you, to my heart, to Nashville” the video teases.
Nashville‘s two-hour premiere is set for January 5th at 9:00 p.m. ET on CMT, with 22 episodes scheduled.
