Watch Carrie Underwood Take Spirited ‘Smoke Break’ on ‘Fallon’

Country phenom performs her latest single and also tells ‘The Tonight Show’ audience a crazy story about her dogs

“You are the real deal,” Jimmy Fallon said to Carrie Underwood after her television debut of “Smoke Break” on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show. And a “real deal” performance it was. Armed with an acoustic guitar, the country superstar gave an electric rendition of the new tune, which made its debut at Number One on Billboard‘s Country Digital Songs chart last month.

Co-written by Underwood, Hillary Lindsey and Chris DeStefano,”Smoke Break” is the first single from the singer’s upcoming Storyteller album, due out October 23rd. It’s an uptempo, highly relatable tune that’s not touting tobacco but rather the need to take a breather from the stresses of everyday life.

“The song is about how life is so hectic and it’s so nice when you actually get to step away for a second,” explains Underwood.

The singer herself is now in her first year of juggling a career with motherhood, after welcoming her first child in March. She joked with Fallon that getting her two dogs used to the baby has been a challenge — and, in one instance, dangerous. Underwood’s two rescue dogs once locked her infant son inside of her in-laws’ car.

“Maybe it was their evil plot,” she laughed. “We were at the airport and. . . you’ve gotta get your luggage, so we got out of the car, shut the door — the car was running, the radio was on, air conditioning going — and the second we shut the doors, the dog jumped up on the control panel and the doors locked. We spent the next half hour trying to [get them to unlock it]. I was convinced they could do it again!”

The dogs wouldn’t reprise their trick, so Underwood’s brother-in-law broke the window. And the baby — whom his mother reports was just laughing in the back seat the whole time — was fine.
