Watch Cale Tyson Get Caught in the Headlights in New Cheating Video

When putting together the fall edition of Rolling Stone Country‘s Artists You Need to Know list, Texas singer-songwriter Cale Tyson was among the first to be included, thanks to his high-lonesome vocal style, timeless persona and lyrics that could have been penned around the dawn of country music. All three of those traits are on display in the video for his new song “Two-Timin’ Blues,” which premieres above. A track from Tyson’s forthcoming full-length, the follow-up to this year’s Cheater’s Wine EP, the song evokes both Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt.

“When I wrote ‘Two-Timin’ Blues,’ I had been listening to a lot of country-blues songs and wanted to try writing a few of my own,” Tyson says. “It’s become one of my favorite styles of songs to write lately.”

While the Nashville resident has written cheating songs before, “Two-Timin’ Blues” marks the first one told from his own perspective. “This is the first I’ve written where I’m the one actually committing the act,” he admits. “I had a girlfriend at the time I wrote it, who mainly worked nights at a bar, so she understandably wasn’t particularly a fan of the ‘she’s making my day while my baby works all night’ line.”

For the song’s video, Tyson enlisted director Joshua Shoemaker, who positioned members of the band — Nashville stalwarts Johnny Appleseed — around and inside a pickup truck. The singer himself was illuminated by the headlights.

“Joshua came up with the concept of having one cameraman inside the truck panning 360 degrees, capturing each musician as they appeared in the song,” Tyson says. “We played it around three times and ended up taking the last cut. All in all, I think it turned out really great.”

Tyson, who along with Margo Price and Raelyn Nelson Band performed at Rolling Stone Country‘s inaugural showcase last month, plays at East Nashville club the Five Spot with the Kenny Vaughan Trio on December 11th.
