Cheating songs are nothing new in country music, but it’s rare that they’re told from the perspective of the woman — as the one doing the cheating. Nashville by-way-of-Brooklyn country artist Michaela Anne chooses that less common approach in her new ballad “The Haunting.” Check out the video premiere above.
“‘The Haunting’ is the most intimate or revealing song I’ve written,” she tells Rolling Stone Country. “I often get asked, sometimes with a hint of concern, if it’s a true story. When I was first writing songs, that would have mortified me, but now I think it’s fun to make them wonder and I take it as a compliment. Overcoming self-censoring and allowing vulnerability was a turning point for me and it very strongly defines the whole album.”
That album is Ease My Mind, Michaela Anne’s stunningly introspective second release. With a lilting voice that recalls Kathleen Edwards, Michaela Anne opens her often conflicted heart over 10 tracks.
“As a songwriter, as well as a listener, songs that share stories that feel real, honest and the most soul-baring are the ones I connect with,” she says. “That’s why I love classic country music.”
Michaela Anne performs in Charlotte, North Carolina, tonight with Girls Guns and Glory, one of Rolling Stone Country‘s Artists You Need to Know.
