Watch Alison Krauss’ Spellbinding ‘I Never Cared for You’ on ‘Colbert’

Singer’s jazzy take on Willie Nelson classic appears on new album ‘Windy City’

Alison Krauss took one of her memorable Windy City tracks to the Big Apple Monday night, appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert for a chilling performance of Willie Nelson’s “I Never Cared for You.” The 53-year-old tune was first a single for Nelson in 1964, the same year the Beatles appeared for the first time at the Ed Sullivan Theater, where the Late Show is now taped.

Krauss was joined by a who’s who of backing musicians, among them members of her Union Station band, Ron Block on guitar and Barry Bales on bass, Matt Rollings on piano and the Cox Family’s Suzanne and Sidney Cox on harmony vocal. The result was a moody, jazz-influenced take on the ironically themed love song that Nelson has re-recorded several times through the years. It would be his only single released on Monument Records before leaving the label to sign with RCA.

Windy City is the first solo album Krauss has released in 17 years, and her first for Capitol Records. Produced by Buddy Cannon, who has helmed several LPs for Nelson and many others, the album also includes classic songs penned by Roger Miller (“River in the Rain”), John Hartford (“Gentle on My Mind”) and Cindy Walker and Eddy Arnold (“You Don’t Know Me”).
