‘The Ranch’: See Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson in Hilarious Preview
“Mom and Dad are like Brooks and Dunn: They get back together a few years and every time they do, it gets worse and worse,” quips “Rooster Bennett” (played by Danny Masterson) in one of many funny moments in the trailer for Netflix’s The Ranch.
Masterson stars alongside his That 70s Show co-star Ashton Kutcher in the irreverent sitcom, with the longtime friends playing brothers living on their family’s Colorado ranch. Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman) plays their bar-owning mom, who lives in an Airstream trailer behind her bar. And veteran actor Sam Elliott (The Big Lebowski, Up in the Air) plays their sharp-tongued father.
“We’re trying to show what it’s like to be on the inside of a dysfunctional family,” Masterson tells CNN. “Things that we’re dealing with are actually things that people are dealing with [like] trying to keep their family business alive. There’s a lot of laughter, but there’s also a lot of heart and things that are gut-wrenching.”
Written by Don Reo and Jim Patterson, The Ranch is Netflix’s second original multi-camera comedy series, following Fuller House. Kutcher, also a producer on the show, says they set it in small-town America to fill a void in the sitcom world.
“It’s the middle of the country, the heartland, and those are the people that probably enjoy these shows the most, yet nobody makes content for them,” he tells Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t think the success of Duck Dynasty was an accident. I think that show was successful because it spoke to a specific audience that can relate to that life.”
