Sunny Sweeney has her eyes on the prize for 2017, sharing plans to release her new full-length album, Trophy. The collection, Sweeney’s fourth overall, is due out March 10th via Thirty Tigers.
For recording, Sweeney looked to producer Dave Brainard, who oversaw the recording of Brandy Clark’s breakthrough 12 Stories as well as releases by Jerrod Niemann and Ray scott. Sweeney co-wrote most of the songs on Trophy with other women, including four selections with Grammy-nominated songwriter Lori McKenna (“Humble and Kind,” “Girl Crush”). She gets personal with songs like “Bottle By My Bed,” which addresses the frustration she’s felt not having a child of her own. A full track listing with credits is below.
Trophy succeeds Sweeney’s 2014 album Provoked, which included the liberating lead single “Bad Girl Phase,” where Sweeney proclaimed “The devil on my shoulder wants a beer right now / And a cigarette and a new boyfriend or two.” Sweeney also released two albums through Big Machine, 2007’s Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame and 2011’s Concrete, which featured the top 10 single “From a Table Away.”
Recently, Sweeney issued a new recording of “One More Christmas Beer,” which she composed some years ago to humorously illustrate the way dysfunctional families handle the holidays. “Sometimes you have to just drink your way through a family gathering,” she told Rolling Stone Country. She’s currently playing a few shows for her Hard Candy Christmas tour, with a December 9th show in Austin, Texas, followed by gigs in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Wichita, Kansas.
