Sturgill Simpson Makes ‘Letterman’ Debut

Kentucky singer-songwriter wows Dave with “Life of Sin”

Last night marked the network television debut for Sturgill Simpson, and, judging by his Facebook posts, he was more excited than nervous to perform on the Late Show With David Letterman. Especially with actor Kurt Russell one of Letterman’s guests.

45 Best Albums of 2014 So Far: ‘Metamodern Sounds in Country Music’

The buzzed-about Simpson, whose Metamodern Sounds in Country Music has been heralded as one of the best albums of the year, performed the album track “Life of Sin” for Letterman, prompting the host to herald the barn-burner as one that makes you want to hit the open road. “Every now and then, stop someplace and start a fight,” Letterman riffed. “[Then] get back in the car, keep driving.”

Afterward, Simpson posed in his Late Show dressing room with a handwritten sign that read, “Yo Dave…it’s all in the reflexes,” a reference to a line in the 1986 fantasy film Big Trouble in Little China, which starred Russell as a fast-talking trucker. He also posted a grinning photo of himself with Late Show stage manager Biff Henderson, claiming he “can retire now.”

A movie buff, Simpson shared his love for the 2007 Coen Brothers film No Country for Old Men, based on the Cormac McCarthy novel, with Rolling Stone Country back in May.

“It’s one of my favorite books or films ever. Probably the greatest western in the last 30 years,” Simpson said. “I probably saw that eight times in the theater, at least. I was out in Utah when it came out and so the landscape and topography was a little too close to home. I drove my wife crazy actually.”

Simpson is set to open for Gregg Allman at a concert in Los Angeles on Saturday.
