Last spring, Steve Earle celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of Guitar Town, the album that introduced his mix of Reagan-era roots-rock and outlaw country. This year, he’s whipping up a similar storm with So You Wannabe an Outlaw, looking to legends like Waylon Jennings for inspiration.

“I was out to unapologetically ‘channel’ Waylon as best as I could,” Earle wrote in a press statement. “This record was all about me playing on the back pick-up of a ’66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life.”

Earle recorded the new album with the Dukes, swelling the backing band’s ranks with the additions of drummer Brad Pemberton, who kept time for Ryan Adams during his time with the Cardinals, and pedal steel player Ricky Ray Jackson. Also making appearances are Miranda Lambert, who duets with Earle on “This is How It Ends,” and guest vocalist Johnny Bush, who wrote Willie Nelson’s “WhiskeyRiver.” Nelson even shows for the title track. The result is a raw, raspy-voiced record that celebrates multiple generations of rule-breakers.

To salute the outlaws who came before him, Earle also recorded a handful of songs originally recorded by Nelson, Jennings and Billy Joe Shaver. Those tracks can be found
on the album’s deluxe edition. Both versions of So You Wannabe an Outlaw will be available June 16th, hitting stores
two weeks before Steve Earle and the Dukes launch their summer tour in New Braunfels, Texas
