See Zac Brown Band’s Dark, Twisty ‘Remedy’ Video

First clip in the band’s video trilogy plays out the sad story of a girl escaping her alcoholic mother

Never ones to rest on their laurels, Zac Brown Band have undertaken an ambitions three-part mini-movie based on songs from their latest album, Jekyll + Hyde.

Part One of the trilogy is set to the track “Remedy,” which is all about breaking chains and finding the inner cure to whatever’s holding you down. The video was written and directed by Diego Pernia, who conceived a multi-layered story focused on a young girl escaping her alcoholic mother. After confronting the issue head on, the girl gets kicked out of the house and eventually ditches her pickup truck in the middle of town, running off toward a fire in a dream-like state that also features a flashback.

Overall, the piece has an unsettling feeling – it’s slightly creepy, like something bad is just around the corner. But it’s locked in to the emotional state of its characters, which Brown says is due to Pernia’s unique outlook on life. Just before shooting, for example, the director fell and broke his jaw, requiring it to be wired shut and preventing him from communicating with the crew. Instead of postponing, he took it as a sign from the universe to use his heart instead of his words.

Although the music is often barely audible, treated with spooky echo effects and playing a secondary role in the project, Brown says the trilogy will ultimately add to each of the songs involved – “Remedy,” “Tomorrow Never Comes” and “I’ll Be Your Man (Song for a Daughter).”

“It gives a story and a life to each one of these songs,” he says. “They can live online, which can have a lot more impressions and views than songs that just happen on the radio.”

Part Two in the series is set to premiere this Friday, June 17th. Zac Brown Band is currently headlining their Black Out the Sun 2016 tour, with upcoming dates in Colorado, Ohio and Wisconsin.
