See William Michael Morgan’s Smooth ‘I Met a Girl’ on ‘Today’

Singer makes his national television debut with his 2016 chart-topping hit

William Michael Morgan made his national television debut on the Today show this morning, performing his Number One hit “I Met a Girl.”

Morgan’s visit to the show coincided with a strong finish to 2016, having just announced his engagement to Jennifer Wayne of Runaway June and been named to join the American Made Tour with Lee Brice and Justin Moore. His Today performance is restrained but confident, recalling the laid-back ease of George Strait in his prime.

Initially released in August 2015, “I Met a Girl” experienced a slow but steady ascent to the top of the Mediabase charts, eventually claiming the top spot over a year later in October 2016. The song, originally written by Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally and Old Dominion’s Trevor Rosen and recorded by Hunt, was transformed into a gentle, traditional ballad about budding romance for Morgan’s debut album Vinyl. That release was widely praised and included on year-end lists for offering a smart blend of traditional instrumentation and hooks, though he preferred not to see himself as an antidote to pop country.

“Not knocking it in any way, shape or form – I think country music is country music, no matter who does it or how it’s done,” he told Rolling Stone Country in September. “It’s just, that’s who I am and that’s the style that I do.”

Currently, Morgan’s single “Missing” is climbing the charts. Later this week, he will play the Tequila Cowboy in Columbus, Ohio on January 6th and then link up with Brice and Moore for the American Made Tour on January 12th in Indianapolis.
