So far, glimpses into Trace Adkins new album Something’s Going On have ranged from the sultry title track to the patriotic ballad, “Still A Soldier.” He strikes a personal note with the official first single “Watered Down,” grappling with middle age, sobriety, and “a couple girls [he] could’ve married.”
In the music video, the singer appears in a modest kitchen, sighing and staring out the window before he gets to work in the field. He feels the early mornings and the strain of labor around the farm more than he did in his twenties, but there’s also a clarity and – implied by his ever-knowing smirk – happiness, or at least contentment. “The back side of 40 ain’t near as crazy, and Sunday morning ain’t near as hazy anymore,” he sings. In one scene, he bellies up to a bar, eyeing the spirits as he sings, “Those old ghosts still chase me, but [I] feel like they’re losing ground,” but orders coffee instead. By the end of the video, it seems clear that Adkins’ window-gazing is less about greeting a new day, and more about peacefully saying goodbye to his old ones.
Something’s Going On drops March 31st. Adkins is currently on tour. His next stop is April 6th at Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio.
