See the Dixie Chicks Remember Prince With ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’
He may not have been actual royalty, but following the sudden death of pop legend Prince on April 21st, it sure feels like he was. The outpouring of grief has, perhaps surprisingly, extended deep into the country music community, sparking a wave of touching tributes and covers.
The Dixie Chicks are the latest to share their love for the impossible-to-pin-down artist, performing a soul-stirring rendition of the Prince-written “Nothing Compares 2 U” in Horsens, Denmark, just one day after his passing. The song was originally released by Prince with his funk project the Family in 1985, but it was made famous by Irish firebrand Sinead O’Connor in 1990. She sang it about the death of her mother, but the Chicks’ version seems to be about Prince himself.
With wounded vocals from Natalie Maines, plus tender fiddle and weeping steel from Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, the devastating song fits well in a somber country framework. It feels lost and full of disappointment, just like so many of Prince’s fans these past few days.
