See Scotty McCreery Sing Emotional ‘5 More Minutes’

Singer debuted tune about his late grandfather on the Grand Ole Opry

Since his 2011 win on American Idol, Scotty McCreery has graced the Grand Ole Opry stage numerous times, but his most recent appearance there also ranks among the most emotional.

Introducing “Five More Minutes” to the audience, a visibly emotional McCreery explained, “I wrote this song a couple weeks after I lost my grandfather. We were very close. He’s never heard this song but I know he’s watching and very proud of me and the fact that I’m at the Grand Ole Opry tonight.”

In the song’s poignant lyrics, McCreery looks back at special moments when he was eight years old fishing in a creek, at 16 with a date and a midnight curfew and at 18 talking to the coach after losing his final high school football game. In the song’s final verse, as he recalls his grandfather’s final moments with “angels in the room,” and the family gathered around to say goodbye, McCreery’s performance turns from powerful to incredibly moving. In the hours after the performance was posted to McCreery’s Facebook page, the clip became the top trending post on the social media site.

In April, McCreery paid tribute to the late Merle Haggard on the Opry with a rendition of the legend’s “Mama Tried.” He continues to prep his third studio LP, but left the Mercury Nashville label earlier this year after releasing the single, “Southern Belle.”
