Clip from new album ‘Tenderheart’ depicts singer trying to balance family life with touring obligations

It’s been the dilemma of the touring artist for as long as music has been mobile: how to balance the joy of filling venues with the sadness of leaving an empty bed behind. Sam Outlaw, in the video for his new single “Everyone’s Looking for Home” from his upcoming sophomore release, Tenderheart, knows this well – he’s had to leave his infant son and wife back in Los Angeles while he stayed on the road for the past two years. Watch the clip above, which features footage of both his home life and band life, linked by the bittersweet joy that unites them both.

“It’s a big deal if you have a great night on the road, but among all the milestones and great things from becoming a musician, none of that compares to the moment you become a parent,” Sam Outlaw tells Rolling Stone Country. “It’s a cliché, but its just fucking true.”

“Everyone’s Looking for Home” is as tender as the album title promises, with Outlaw leaning not on a feigned twang but a folksinger softness, filling in the spaces with the mariachi horns and gentle harmonies that have come to define his breed of California country. True to the personal nature of this second LP, Outlaw produced Tenderheart himself alongside engineer Martin Pradler, enlisting Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes (who appeared on his debut, Angeleno) as well as mariachi group Erwin Vasquez and Mariachi Teocuitatlan,

“I feel like it’s been almost two straight years of touring since Angeleno came out,” Outlaw says. “I quit my job almost exactly two years ago to do the touring thing, but it feels like ten years. I make the joke that I’m 34, living the dream of a 24 year old. You learn a lot about yourself and other people. Some of that stuff has been painful, but awesome.”

Tenderheart is out April 14th on Six Shooter Records.
