See Ryan Adams, Infamous Stringdusters Do ‘Sweet Carolina’ on ‘Colbert’

Collaboration on the Adams’ classic off his seminal ‘Heartbreaker’ album also features Nicki Bluhm

Originally released in 2000, Ryan Adams’ seminal debut album Heartbreaker remains one of the cornerstones of the Americana genre, as well a gateway record for neophyte country-music fans. In May, Adams reissued the LP as a special deluxe box set and has been including some of its key tracks in recent set lists. Last night on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he enlisted bluegrass outfit the Infamous Stringdusters and singer Nicki Bluhm to perform “Oh My Sweet Carolina.”

Adams’ nostalgic love letter to the South — specifically to the grandparents who raised him; “Those are the people that I loved at home,” Adams told Rolling Stone in May — the studio version of the track featured Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals. On Colbert, Bluhm handles those integral parts, while the Stringdusters add a bluegrass flavor to the ballad.

The TV appearance marks just the latest collaboration between Adams and the Infamous Stringdusters. In June, they jammed together at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, including a left-field cover of Dio’s 1983 heavy-metal hit “Holy Diver.” (Watch the video below).
