Tourmates harmonize on Patrick Swayze’s “She’s Like the Wind” at a show in Ireland

Though it didn’t end with Ryan Adams lifting Natalie Prass in the air above the crowd a la Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing, their duet on the classic Eighties hit “She’s Like the Wind” is no less harmonious (though certainly less acrobatic). This week at a tour stop in Cork, Ireland, opening act Prass joined Adams for a bare, nearly somber version of the Swayze-penned song that left some audience members laughing, as the juxtaposition of leotard memories with the haunting delivery is a little unusual. But the result is an impressive ballad that’s earnest with just enough of a wink.

Prass, whose debut self-titled full length was released this January, and Adams have been doing plenty of musical chairs on the road together. He has covered her “Your Fool,” and she’s joined him for “Oh My Sweet Carolina” and “Come Pick Me Up.” Known for his esoteric choice of covers — from Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” to Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell” — this is the first time he’s tackled the 1987 Swayze classic.

Dirty Dancing’s soundtrack was one of the best-selling albums of all time, with its classic tracks like Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes” and Mickey & Silvia’s “Love Is Strange.” Who knows — maybe we’ll be hearing Adams ask Prass, “How do you call your Lover Boy?” on tour sometime soon.
