See Nikki Lane Unplug for Defiant ‘Highway Queen’

Singer performs title track from her new album and two others during 30A Songwriters Festival in Florida

One of the best aspects of Nikki Lane’s new album Highway Queen is its production, which marries the virtuosic playing of the Texas Gentlemen to Lane’s swaggering twang. As it turns out, though, Lane’s songs sound just as good stripped down to two guitars.

Earlier this year, Lane and Highway Queen co-producer Jonathan Tyler performed a handful of songs for Folk Alley at the 30A Songwriters Festival in South Walton, Florida, armed with only two guitars and two microphones.

On the title track, Lane and Tyler bring out the defiant track’s rootsier side, Tyler lending harmony vocals to Lane’s declaration that “the highway queen don’t need no king.” The pair also perform Highway Queen cuts “Jackpot” and “Lay You Down.”

Lane kicked off her Stagecoach Spotlight Nikki Lane Highway Queen Tour in late February, which features a rotating roster of guests like Tyler, Brent Cobb and Robert Ellis. She’ll perform at the Stagecoach Festival this April.
