Many of the songs on Miranda Lambert’s double LP The Weight of These Wings find the performer singing about protecting herself in some manner, whether it’s hiding behind a cheap pair of shades or escaping down the road. In “Tin Man,” a quiet ballad that opens the second half of the album, she yearns to be invulnerable and is forced to reckon with the futility of that desire.

Lambert recently posted a brief live performance video of “Tin Man,” shot at her February 24th tour stop in Charlottesville, Virginia. The stark, black-and-white clip only has time for one verse and chorus of the song, but the fact that Lambert sings it alone, armed with only an acoustic guitar, is ample evidence of its power.

So far, “Tin Man” – written by Lambert with Jack Ingram and Jon Randall – hasn’t been released as an official single from The Weight of These Wings, which is nominated for Album of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 2nd. Lambert’s team is currently promoting the quirky single “We Should Be Friends,” along with its delightfully campy companion video

Lambert’s headlining Highway Vagabond Tour hits Providence, Rhode Island, on March 2nd, followed by stops in Amherst, Massachusetts and Uncasville, Connecticut.
