See Miranda Lambert’s Fiery Southern-Rock Jam ‘Covered Wagon’

Lambert breaks out cover of less-known tune by Seventies singer-songwriter Danny O’Keefe at Auburn, Alabama show

Miranda Lambert’s got a thing for playing quirky covers during her live concerts, but usually they’re well known songs like the Eagles’ “Desperado” or even No Doubt’s pop-punk “Spiderwebs.” During the first stop of Kenny Chesney’s Spread the Love Tour on April 23rd in Auburn, Alabama, though, the spunky superstar dug deep into her bag of tricks for a cover no one saw coming.

Lambert and her onstage crew performed a rocking tribute to Seventies folk singer Danny O’Keefe, but not with his big hit “Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues.” Instead, she introduced fans to “Covered Wagon,” a lighthearted tune about an old soul trapped in the modern era, similar to message behind Hank Williams Jr.’s “Dinosaur” — but less grumpy.

“Get the lead out mama / Pack up everything we own / The smog’s about the get me / And I’ve got a mind to roam / In my covered wagon / Baby, on down the road we go,” it goes.

Flashing a sparkling guitar and sparkling miniskirt, Lambert lets her band stretch out, giving this deep cut new life with a foot-stomping beat and a group of backup singers. Her next tour date is April 30th at the iHeartRadio Festival in Austin, Texas, and she’ll rejoin Chesney’s Spread the Love tour for a May 7th show in Phoenix.
