See Maren Morris Sing Soulful ‘Once’

Session was recorded live at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A

Maren Morris leads a group of sharp-dressed men and female backup singers in her new performance of “Once,” recorded live from the tracking room of Nashville’s RCA Studio A.

“Once,” which brings her debut album, Hero to a close, finds Morris waxing nostalgic about a former flame who’s moved on. “Don’t forget that you loved me once,” she sings at the refrain’s end, backed by stacked harmonies and swirls of organ. A live staple since she opened for Chris Stapleton at the Ryman Auditorium in February, “Once” shines a light on the soulful swagger of Morris’ voice, which has more in common with Adele’s super-sized wail than, say, Miranda Lambert’s twang.

Joined by a studio band whose members include guitarist Ben Lewis and organist Ian Fitchuk, Morris rips into this live performance with all the grit and gusto of a singer who’s been on the road all summer long, opening up a string of amphitheater shows for headliner Keith Urban. She’s poised one minute and punchy the next, armed with towering vocal chops.
