Sixteen summers ago, Maren Morris was just 10 years old and Lyric Street Records had just released the debut LP by Rascal Flatts. The trio would go on to multi-platinum success and six consecutive CMA Vocal Group of the Year trophies and Morris would have a huge breakout hit in 2016 with “My Church.” Past and present came together during this summer’s CMA Music Festival as Morris joined the group’s Gary LeVox, Joe Don Rooney and Jay DeMarcus on day one of the nightly concerts for a spirit-filled version of her “My Church,” accompanied by a houseful of hallelujahs and amens that would have rattled the rafters if the open-air Nissan Stadium had any.
The collaboration was just one of the stage highlights captured for Wednesday night’s ABC special, CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock. This year’s edition of what has become a summer TV tradition was hosted by Brett Eldredge and Thomas Rhett and also featured memorable CMA Fest 2016 appearances from another veteran group and solo artist, Lady Antebellum and Cam. Also included were performances from Steven Tyler, Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton and more.
