See Maren Morris’ Gutting ‘I Could Use a Love Song’ Video

Singer’s ballad about coping with heartbreak is accompanied by a narrative of a couple’s dissolution

What’s the cost of pursuing your dreams? Maren Morris poses that question in the new video for her latest single, “I Could Use a Love Song,” one of the most emotionally wounded ballads from her acclaimed 2016 LP, Hero.

Directed by Alon Isocianu, who directed Morris’ colorful video for the song “80s Mercedes,” “I Could Use a Love Song” is an if-these-walls-could-talk story of a seemingly happy young couple who move into a house together but splinter apart as the woman decides to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer. At first, the man doesn’t take her seriously, but as she begins to talk of moving to Los Angeles he devolves into drinking and belittling her plans. In keeping with the realist tone of the song, there’s no neat, happy ending to the couple’s feud.

There’s a ring of truth to the video for Morris, who left her home in Texas in her early 20s to become a songwriter in Nashville and, later, the major label recording artist that she is today. A staple of her live shows, Morris frequently introduces “I Could Use a Love Song” as being the result of a breakup during the writing of Hero.

“I Could Use a Love Song” was released as a single on March 27th, the same week that Morris’ duet with Thomas Rhett, “Craving You,” was released. A video for that song, directed by TK McKamey, was unveiled last week. Morris will tour with Sam Hunt this summer and is slated to perform “I Could Use a Love Song” on The Voice on May 9th.
