See Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne Cover Chris Stapleton’s ‘Fire Away’
Tackling a Chris Stapleton song live onstage isn’t for the feint of heart. It requires strong vocal cords and more than a little balls — fortunately, Maren Morris and Brothers Osborne have both in spades. The two acts proved it on Monday night with their take on Stapleton’s “Fire Away” at the first-annual Association of Independent Music PublishersAwards at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
At the event designed to honor independent songs, songwriters and publishers, Morris and TJ Osborne offered a fine version of the tune, nominated for Song of the Year, that balanced her R&B tinge with the deep and subtle corners of his lower register. All of it was accompanied by some tasteful but powerful guitar stylings from John Osborne. The last time Morris was on the Ryman stage, she was singing a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” with Stapleton himself.
Morris is gearing up for the release of her debut LP, Hero, on June 3rd, while Brothers Osborne are on tour through summer, including dates as a special guest on Miranda Lambert’s Keeper of the Flame Tour.
