See Luke Combs’ Jubilant Cover of Brooks & Dunn’s ‘Brand New Man’

“Hurricane” singer shows off his love for Nineties country with acoustic rendition

Luke Combs has one of those voices that sounds right singing just about anything. So while recent Number One “Hurricane” asserts his place as a rising star in the current country marketplace, the North Carolina native can easily switch things up with an ace cover of Brooks and Dunn’s chart-topping 1991 debut “Brand New Man.”

In an acoustic performance recorded for the Sony Music Nashville series Live @ 1201, Combs confidently belts out the tune with a little instrumental and vocal help from his two guitarists, Tyler King and Rob Williford. Instead of mimicking Ronnie Dunn’s quicksilver croon, Combs – who wore a Brooks & Dunn T-shirt to the CMT Awards red carpet – brings an earthy, gritty vocal texture to his interpretation, taking delight as he sustains notes and introduces each chorus with a throaty “Whoa-oh!”

Combs released his debut album This One’s for You on June 2nd, landing at Number One on the Billboard Country Albums chart upon release. His tuneful songwriting and easygoing manner – along with that voice – have contributed to making him one of 2017’s biggest new success stories in country.

“I think my cool factor is not having one,” he told Rolling Stone Country in January. “I’m not extra cool or extra different. I’m an honest dude, not trying to be anything other than who I am.”

Combs’ latest single is “When It Rains It Pours,” and he’ll continue to open shows on Brantley Gilbert’s The Devil Don’t Sleep Tour this summer.
