Crystal Gayle is officially a member of the Grand Ole Opry. The country music singer who experienced a successful pop crossover in the late Seventies with her signature song “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” was inducted into the Nashville institution on January 21st.
Gayle’s induction was distinguished by the appearance of Loretta Lynn, Gayle’s sister, herself a Grand Ole Opry member since 1962. “We’ve been together a long time, honey. And we’ve never had a fight,” said Lynn of Gayle. “It was the greatest moment of my life when they made me a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1962. I know she is just as happy as I was then.”
Carrie Underwood initially extended the invitation to Gayle to join the Opry during a surprise appearance in November.
Gayle’s induction follows the announcement that bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent will also become Opry members. Their ceremony is set for March 11th.
