See Lake Street Dive’s Soulful ‘Close to Me’ on ‘Colbert’

Roots-pop group dresses the part on ‘The Late Show’ for throwback tune from their album ‘Side Pony’

Lake Street Dive brought some old-school soul to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, stopping by on Wednesday to perform their song “Close to Me.”

Kicked off by drummer Mike Calabrese, the Brooklyn-via-Boston quartet lurched into a crunchy, soulful rendition of the Side Pony track, complete with a greasy guitar solo and some serious vocal pyrotechnics from lead singer Rachael Price. True to their retro roots, the band donned Fifties and Sixties-inspired apparel, with Price in a heart and star-adorned take on a poodle skirt.

Side Pony came out in 2016, with Rolling Stone‘s review calling the album’s title track “surely the greatest coiffure anthem since Willow Smith’s ‘Whip My Hair.'” The Dave Cobb-produced effort is the band’s fifth studio album and their first for Nonesuch Records.

Lake Street Dive is currently on tour through early September. Tonight, they visit the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, followed by a June 23rd gig at Pisgah Brewing Company in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
