Urban’s new single, “The Fighter” is an energetic dance-floor anthem that features Underwood crooning, “And if I get scared?” as the singer-guitarist reassures his partner that he’ll hold her tighter. Urban wrote the song with busbee and it’s a highlight of his album Ripcord, nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Album at this year’s ceremony, opposite Brandy Clark’s Big Day in a Small Town, Loretta Lynn’s Full Circle, Maren Morris’ Hero and, the record that took home the trophy, Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.
The Nashville stars first performed “The Fighter” live onstage in Wellington, New Zealand, in December, during a stop on Urban’s Ripcord World Tour.
“I’ve always loved singing with her,” Urban said of Underwood last April in a statement. “We had written this song, ‘The Fighter,’ that needed a female voice and Carrie’s voice immediately came to mind.”
Urban is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance for “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” his previous single off Ripcord that hit Number One in January. The ballad, written by Clint Lagerberg, Hillary Lindsey and Steven Lee Olsen, was also up for Best Country Song.
Underwood received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance for her song “Church Bells.”
