See John Paul White’s Plaintive ‘Simple Song’ Off ‘Southern Family’
While several songs on the newly released Southern Family album from producer Dave Cobb focus on the quiet, peaceful moments of Southern life, just as many examine the ripples of grief that afflict close-knit families in the wake of a loss. John Paul White’s “Simple Song,” which opens the album, is one such offering.
This live video, premiering today, pictures the former Civil Wars member giving an acoustic performance of the song inside a sprawling, empty antebellum home. White takes on the character of a woman who stoically upholds her marital vows through the “death do us part” bit, even though her partner isn’t an easy man to live with or love. “I will remember you, but I will cry for you no more,” White sings, his words reverberating through the cavernous space. White’s own grandmother served as his inspiration, having raised her family and stuck by her husband even though he had demons he couldn’t shake.
In addition to “Simple Song,” Southern Family features songs from an all-star lineup of performers, including Miranda Lambert, Jason Isbell, Brandy Clark, Zac Brown and Morgane Stapleton with Chris Stapleton.
