See Jennifer Nettles, Brandy Clark’s ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’

Country tourmates bring groove, guitars to mid-Eighties pop smash

When Jennifer Nettles hit the road last year for the first leg of her That Girl Tour, she teamed up with opening act Brandy Clark to turn “His Hands” — a seldom-heard bonus track from Nettles’ solo debut — into one of the shows’ nightly highlights. One year later, the two are sharing the stage once again, this time swapping verses and harmonies on a very different tune.

In the video above, Nettles and Clark tackle Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” during a Florida stop on Nettles’ Playing With Fire Tour. Their version is slower and smoother than Lauper’s mid-Eighties recording, driven forward by electric guitar and upright bass rather than synthesizers. Nettles keeps things appropriately tongue-in-cheek, too, hamming it up during the bridge and flashing plenty of smiles at Clark, who handles the tune’s second verse. Clark winds up staying onstage for the next song, too, playing acoustic guitar during a Kristian Bush-less version of Sugarland’s second single, “Something More.”

Lauper, coincidentally, has been spending time in Nashville this month making a country record with famed producer Tony Brown (George Strait, Brooks & Dunn).
