Nearly five years after recording his own version of the Squidbillies theme song, Jason Isbell is working with the Cartoon Network program once again, this time as a guest star. Isbell voices a new character, pastor Kyle Nubbins, in the season 10 finale, which airs this Sunday, August 21st at 11:30 p.m. ET.
In the clip above, Isbell’s hip preacher — complete with pomaded hair, decorative wrist cuff and a Jesus tat — welcomes the Culyer family to a backwoods church in Appalachian country. He’s excited about the job, even if the church itself leaves something to be desired.
“Don’t get me wrong; I’m thankful for God’s shining light,” he says, gesturing toward the hole in the building’s roof. “Just not in our sanctuary.” The clip ends there, with Early Cuyler sending a shotgun blast into the ceiling out of excitement.
Since airing its first episodes in 2005, Squidbillies has made room for cameo appearances by a long list of Americana artists, including Elizabeth Cook, the Drive-By Truckers, Lucinda Williams, Todd Snider and David Allan Coe.
